NASA photomosaic of the lunar nearside.
The Moon is 4.45 billion years old and is heavily cratered by asteroid and meteoroid impacts. The dark lunar seas (Maria) comprise basaltic lava flow. The light lunar highlands feature white/grey anorthosite rock.
The Fra Mauro Crater Formation, the highland destination of Apollo 13 named for a skilled 15th Century Venetian cartographer-monk, is located near the center of the image.
